Even before you step through the doors of the orange and chartreuse house that is home to Suzie Q Beads, and you see it is a truly unique bead boutique—the chartreuse beaded Volvo parked out front indicates that this isn’t a run-of-the-mill business!

Owner Suzin Skyler Hein credits her “craft girl” beginnings with the creation of Suzie Q Beads, which opened in 2002. The shop, she says, is for both beginners and the already bead-obsessed. “I absolutely love what I’m doing with my bead store,” she says. “Seeking out fabulous beads for my wonderful customers, inspiring and educating them . . . it’s so much fun. I’m passionately dedicated to fostering the art of beading.”

The shop, which doubles as a workshop and gallery carries a large selection of beading books, tools, findings, wire, and sterling silver, Czech pressed glass, vintage, semiprecious, and Japanese seed beads. Classes are offered in introductory jewelry making, wireworking, beadweaving, bead crochet, bead knitting, beaded beads, and bead embroidery.

Suzin’s bead obsession isn’t limited to the beads in her shop: by the time the engine gave out, about one third of her first car a 1984 Saab (also known as Mr. SLABB), was covered in beads, including a jewel-encrusted crown on the top. Although the Saab was retired, it is still parked behind the shop, and Suzin has a new shop mascot—the beaded Volvo, which she has named Mr Bead. “Mr Bead has fewer beads than his predecessor but looks way better design-wise in the way the beads are being attached, so I think of Mr. SLABB as my practice car” she says. “Everywhere we go, we always get a lot of attention!”
